A first look at Premetro Antwerpen
To complete four unused underground metro stations from the 1970s in Antwerp, archipelago, together with Group A and Tractebel, is working on a new design for the metro stations and a full reactivation of this part of the underground metro network. |
“The big challenge is to translate the hardware from the 1970s and 1980s into the present. We want sufficient daylight in the ticket halls and travelers must be able to see each other. We want to increase comfort as well as safety.”
Lennart Luchtens, project architect archipelago
In the design of the stations much attention is paid to the characteristic concrete tube roof of the metro. By making these elements visible and using extra lighting, the recognizability of the stations is enhanced.
In the next phase, the design team will look at how the four new stations can be given a neighbourhood feel in cooperation with local artists.
