First stone laid for new wing of Sint-Franciscus Hospital

Works started on Friday 10 January for the new wing of the Sint-Franciscus Hospital in Heusden-Zolder.

The G-wing will house a psychiatric ward (PAAZ), a surgical day hospital, geriatrics, oncology and an internal day hospital. Green spaces will be created around the new building with terraces, seating areas and sports fields. A soothing and healing environment for patients, visitors and staff.

‘This project is an important step in the future of Sint-Franciscus Hospital and will not only increase the capacity for medical care, but also optimise the well-being of patients and staff by creating a modern, well-equipped, green and comfortable environment’ Nele Sneyers, general manager, Sint-Franciscus Hospital.

‘The new wing of Sint-Franciscus Hospital will be an extremely sustainable project. We therefore design with optimal use of daylight and chose innovative materials. This is immediately evident in the façade concept. High windows bring light deep into the rooms and large terraces give access to fresh outdoor air. In addition, we use a CO₂-negative facing brick that absorbs CO₂ during the production process and retains it permanently. Moreover, the facing brick is produced locally and 80% of the raw materials come from steel industry waste streams.’ Stef Wevers, architect & partner, archipelago.

A Design & Build project in collaboration with Bouwbedrijf Keulen H. and STRABAG Belgium.
