Opening McDonald’s Mechelen
Welcome to Belgium’s first McDonald’s with an underground ‘McDrive’!
In line with the overall masterplan of the Keerdok site, cars are diverted as much as possible from the open spaces, so we designed an underground parking with drive-through, as well as ample bike parking and a large outdoor terrace. Skylights bring natural daylight to the underground level, while the upper levels offer all-round views and will accommodate the familiar restaurant experience. The overall sustainability ambitions of the project will result in the first BREEAM certification for a McDonald’s restaurant in Belgium.
The terracotta tiles and copper-coloured cladding are inspired by the historic dockside architecture, from façade to the roof, visible from the neighbouring buildings and high-rise constructions, such as archipelago’s recently completed Mobility Hub – a hybrid and adaptable parking structure situated right across the Keerdok site.
